Trailing Spouses - Rebuilding Careers After Moving for Love
When Vaishali Gauba moved from India to Canada to study and be with her boyfriend, she struggled with a sense of identity loss.
Although moving for love was exciting, she had to work hard to rebuild her professional and personal identity in a new place. It meant going from not knowing how to file taxes in Canada to starting a new business there, communicating openly with her boyfriend so she didn't miss out on activities she loved, and getting stuck into hobbies so she could meet new people, rather than relying on her partner's social circle.
In her personal essay, which I had the pleasure of commissioning for Business Insider, Gauba outlines what it felt like to be a "trailing spouse" — picking up her life and adjusting her career so she could be physically present with her partner.
I'm looking to hear from others who've been a "trailing spouse" about what it's meant for them to grow and adapt their careers after moving for love.
