UK Prisons: Seeking experiences from former inmates or prison staff on prison food and staying healthy inside
Hi all,
I'm hoping to hear directly from people with lived experience of UK prisons (former prisoners especially, but also current or former staff).
I'm working on a piece about health and weight in prison, and while we have official data, I'm really keen to understand the day-to-day realities in prisons.
In particular, I'd love to hear:
\* What prison food was like in practice (quality, portions, nutrition)
\* Whether healthier options were realistically available
\* How easy or hard it was to exercise regularly
\* Whether weight gain was common among people you know (or yourself)
\* How easy it was to overeat, for example, access to extra snacks, food from the canteen/shop, food trading (and was this monitored?) or extra portions at mealtimes - whether officially allowed or not
You don't need to share anything identifying (age and prison would be helpful, but not required), and replies can be anonymised.
If you'd rather not comment publicly, feel free to DM me and we can discuss privately.
Thank you in advance!
