US Gay Men Who Were Teens 1998-2004 - Abercrombie's Role In Sexuality
Did Abercrombie shape your teenage gay sexual imagination?
Hi! I'm a gay journalist of a certain age and am thinking about writing a magazine essay about the impact of late 1990s-early 2000s homoerotic Abercrombie on gay teenage boys in America, especially in places where there wasn't much gay culture or other gay representation. Informally among people I know, this is an almost universal reference point: the shopping bags, the shirtless greeters, and to a lesser extent the A&F Quarterly.
I want to collect some data to hopefully get a large enough sample size to say something actually meaningful about it. (This is also kind of important considering how much cultural memory has turned against A&F because of its supposed racism, lookism, etc, though I think a lot of that ignores or overlooks the gay experience. If you're a nonwhite gay man who has feelings about Abercrombie, I'd especially love to hear from you!)
I've created a survey with an open-response question where you can write some thoughts. You can remain anonymous, or provide an email where I can contact you for a potential interview.
