“Over 50s can’t adapt to AI.” Really? This came up when I was filming an upcoming episode ofOvee’s Beyond the CVwith Richard Spencer from AgeInc And Richard made a point that has really stuck with me. Think about the technology people now in their 50s and 60s have already adapted to across their careers. Fixed-line phones and paper-based processes. Personal computers. Email. The internet. Mobile phones. Smartphones. Cloud. Digital transformation. Remote working. And now AI. Richard’s view is that no one in the workplace has had to adapt to more change than people now in their 50s and 60s. Yet through the research I’ve been doing for theOvee Over 50 Initiative, I keep hearing the same assumption: experienced professionals are less adaptable, less interested in technology or unable to keep up. I don’t buy it. Not every person over 50 is great with technology. Nor is every person under 30. Capability isn’t determined by age. AI is going to change how we work. What should matter is whether someone is willing and able to learn, adapt and use it, not the year they were born. So I’d like to hear from employers, recruiters and experienced professionals: Are you seeing real evidence that over 50s struggle to adapt to AI? I've just done a quick count - since mid 2023 I have talked in depth to a total of 85 people about loneliness. I've learned so much and more importantly, connected with so many amazing people. The book ('On Loneliness') that I published last year with The School of Life contains 50 stories, but I decided before finishing it that I wanted to reach 100 people in total. I am writing the next My Little Book of... for My Staff Shop and I am interested in speaking to comms professionals, academics, industry influencers, business leaders, and HRDs from large organisations who would be willing to share some expertise with me in the form of quotes about the importance of workplace communication (in all forms). Chapters of interest for me include intercultural comms in the workplace, and generational comms in the office, neurodiversity, remote workers and disconnected communication, culture and all that lovely stuff.
